When you run a chiropractic clinic, the mindset you bring as a leader will shape every aspect of your practice—from patient care and retention to team morale and financial health. Unlike an employee mindset, where stability and routine are the primary concerns, a leadership mindset in business requires embracing challenges, uncertainty, and a vision for growth. Here are key mental models that can empower you to become a visionary leader and build a practice that thrives.
1. Embrace the 80/20 Principle: Focus on High-Impact Areas
A classic principle from Vilfredo Pareto, the 80/20 rule (or Pareto Principle), reveals that 20% of your efforts generate 80% of your results. In my chiropractic clinic, this means identifying and focusing on core activities—such as External Systems and Internal Systems.
Components that fall into External Systems might be:
Internal systems might be:
That’s it!!! When it comes to the 80/20 rule - please do not overcomplicate things. These simple, unsexy, yet, HIGHLY effective principles is what drives clinic growth and client’s success.
When you understand what drives the most significant outcomes, you can free up mental bandwidth, working not just harder but much smarter.
2. From Technician to Entrepreneur: Avoiding the "Technician Trap"
Imagine a chiropractor, let’s call him John, who is the primary provider in his clinic, handling everything from patient care to cleaning. In this "Technician Trap," John’s business can’t operate without him, which caps growth and risks burnout. To transition, he’d use a Fire Yourself Chart (to map out his current roles and responsibilities, from scheduling to treatment, and then build systems or hire staff to manage those tasks.
Pro Hint: The Technician to CEO Model requires reframing the question from “How can I serve more patients?” to “How can my business serve more patients without me?” Start by automating admin tasks (online scheduling, automated reminders), delegating hands-on tasks, and refining protocols that staff can follow independently. This shift frees Sarah to focus on business growth rather than being the day-to-day bottleneck.
3. Cultivate a Systems Thinking Approach
Every element of your business—from patient intake to team meetings—is part of a larger ecosystem. As a leader, your job is to create synergy, where each part of the business reinforces the other. Leaders who adopt a systems-thinking approach see their clinic not as a series of independent tasks but as an interconnected structure where changes in one area affect the whole.
By implementing SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and frameworks like the Chiropractic Business Nirvana, you’re creating a clinic that operates on clear, predictable processes. This ensures high-quality care and efficiency, empowering your team and providing stability for patients.
4. Entrepreneurial Resilience: Strategic Planning in Tough Times
Great leaders are distinguished by their resilience and adaptability. In challenging economic conditions, the entrepreneurial mindset is all about proactive planning and pivoting rather than reaction. In your clinic, this means not just maintaining patient flow but leveraging strategies for sustainable growth, even in turbulent times.
Pro Hint: For example, you can diversify your patient acquisition channels to buffer against economic shifts. We teach our Mastermind group of like-minded clinic owners to do a 12 month marketing plan and “plug and play” our playbooks to have predictable and consistent ways to generate new patients. Leaders who strategically plan for change create a clinic that is recession-resistant and adaptable.
5. Cognitive Energy Management: Conserve "Cognitive Calories"
The entrepreneurial journey is demanding, and it’s easy to become mentally exhausted. One of the most powerful lessons in leadership is learning to conserve cognitive energy or "cognitive calories" for the highest-impact decisions. Each day, prioritise tasks that will drive growth, such as strategy and patient experience, and delegate low-impact tasks that drain your mental resources.
Leaders who master this principle focus on fewer, more effective decisions, which in turn drives the clinic's success. Just as you conserve your physical energy for challenging tasks, preserve your mental energy for strategic thinking and visionary planning.
6. Serve with Purpose: Patient-Centred, Team-Centred Growth
Finally, as a clinic owner, remember that the best leaders lead with purpose. This means viewing every interaction with patients and team members as an opportunity to impact lives positively. A leader's mindset is not just about numbers but about nurturing a culture of care and community. By putting patient needs first, fostering team alignment, and celebrating wins together, you’re building a practice that thrives on trust, service quality, and community impact.
Pro Hint: If you haven’t yet - spend the next hour or two coming up with a company Vision and Mission. These will act as the Northstar of your business and lead your team, and patients to success.
